Since 2013, average annual Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth has fallen to just 0.7%. This requires another upward revision of the target TFP growth rate to 2% if we are to achieve sustainable agricultural production. There is an urgent need to elevate our efforts to accelerate TFP growth. The annual Global Agricultural Productivity Report™, is the premier source for productivity data, analysis, and policy recommendations that inspire action to address this urgent need for increased TFP growth.
The 2024 GAP Report™, launched in early October, emphasizes the critical need to bridge the gap between research and development and widespread adoption—referred to as the ‘valley of death’—through the strategic bundling of productivity-enhancing tools with distribution mechanisms, socio-economic tools, and policy levers. This report explores how these bundles, tailored to local contexts and integrated with existing proven tools, can overcome barriers that prevent farmers from adopting tools that drive sustainable productivity growth.
The 2024 GAP Report™ launch explored realistic and appropriate pathways to unlocking the full potential of productivity-enhancing tools to benefit farmers, society, the environment, and the global economy through high-impact bundles. The launch event, which took place on October 3, in Washington, D.C., focused on the power of bundling innovations to address the challenges of the global agricultural productivity slowdown. Participants emphasized the importance of partnerships between public and private sectors to scale these innovations effectively. Farmers shared how localized solutions, such as early maturing maize in Zambia and soil testing in India, have significantly improved productivity and resilience. Overall, the discussions reinforced the need for integrated, climate-resilient approaches to drive sustainable agricultural growth.
